PEER History

On the 10th of August 2001 in Helsinki five leading national environmental research centres in Europe decided to found the ”Partnership for European Environmental Research" (PEER) with the aim of combining their forces in order to follow a joint strategy in environmental sciences and to enhance research on ecological sustainability. This co-operation was confirmed by a Framework Agreement signed on the 25th of June 2002 in Roskilde.

The PEER members are public financed research centres with scientific autonomy that are dedicated to environmental research with a predominant focus on interactions between man and the environment. The PEER centres are characterised by their interdisciplinary expertise, including a wide range of natural and social scientific disciplines, covering all fields of environmental sciences.

Presently, PEER has seven member organisations employing together 4700 persons and having a combined annual budget of 360 Million Euro. The PEER institutes have a long-term experience of participation in major international networks and programmes and are actively involved in a considerable number of running and planned projects of the EU RTD Framework Programmes.
