METIER Graduate Training Course No. 2:
Information Management in Environmental Sciences
19 - 24 February 2007, Montpellier
Objective
Information management in environmental sciences represents an essential but still underdeveloped prerequisite for modern environmental research dealing with the increasing amount of data. Information management does not refer only to putting data into a data bank. Data and information, no matter whether derived from remote sensing, field or statistical sources, should be managed in a way that scientists from different research areas are able to use and assess these data. Such a data and information management requires specific information technologies and skills. Identifying and assessing the really important data based on a broad data set is a main challenge. The other major need is to prepare the data in a way that it can be easily used by the different methodological approaches, researchers from different disciplines as well as by clients who are not experts in the respective research field.
