ALTERRA is the research institute that contributes to the sustainable use of our environment. Flora and fauna, soil, water, the environment, geo-information and remote sensing, landscape and spatial planning, man and society are just a few examples of (inter)national issues that Alterra focuses on. ALTERRA was founded in 2000 as a result of a merger of three formerly independent institutes. ALTERRA engages in strategic and applied research to support design processes, policy-making and management at the local, national and international level. This includes not only innovative, interdisciplinary research on complex problems relating to the environment, but also the production of readily applicable knowledge and expertise enabling rapid and adequate solutions to practical problems.
The many themes of ALTERRA's research effort include relations between cities and their surrounding countryside, multiple use of rural areas, economy and ecology, integrated water management, sustainable agricultural systems, planning for the future, expert systems and modelling, biodiversity, landscape planning and landscape perception, integrated forest management, geo-information and remote sensing, spatial planning of leisure activities, habitat creation in marine and estuarine waters, green belt development and ecological webs, pollution risk assessment and drainage and irrigation.
ALTERRA with its 500 staff is part of Wageningen University and Research Centre (Wageningen UR) In research and education Alterra closely cooperates with the Environmental Sciences Department from Wageningen University. Together with this department, we form the Environmental Sciences Group. 50% of ALTERRA's 50 million Euro budget is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
