Centre for Agricultural and Environmental Engineering Research (France)

Cemagref is a public agricultural and environmental research institute whose work focuses on sustainable development in non-urban areas. It contributes to the conservation and acceptable management of land and water systems, the growth of economic activity on a sustainable basis, and the prevention of associated risks. Cemagref’s research usually addresses complex systems and their interaction with human society, being an interdisciplinary approach the most appropriate way. Beside advancing fundamental knowledge, Cemagref makes available its diagnostics and control methods, designs negotiation and management tools, develops innovative technologies and supports public and private enterprise with its skills and experience.

Research organised in nine domains

The scientific fields covered lie at the heart of sustainable-development issues.
• Management of water and related public services
• Water-related risks
• Water and waste technologies and processes
• Quality of aquatic ecosystems
• Terrestrial ecosystems
• Multifunctional agriculture and new rural realities
• Technologies for sustainable agricultural systems
• Research methods for environmental systems
• Physical technologies and processes for food safety

Key figures

The Cemagref annual budget is €81.6 million with contract revenues amounting to €16 million. Cemagref employs approximately 1 350 people, including 900 full-time staff, of which one half are researchers and engineers, divided into 29 research units on nine main sites.
Over 200 graduate candidates, as well as 40 graduate students and foreign researchers are also present, plus 250 interns preparing Masters degrees.
Their expertise lies in the fields of the engineering sciences, the natural and life sciences, earth sciences, the humanities and social sciences.

Research results

The research and other work carried out at Cemagref produce an array of results.
The publications, participation in conferences, advice and expert knowledge provided to public entities, tests and analyses, patents and software, as well as training and standardisation efforts all contribute to fulfilling the missions of the institute.
These results, tailored to the needs of recipients, are subjected to quality procedures that Cemagref has already set up for tests and analyses and is in the process of setting up for research activities.
