Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ (Germany)
|
Founded in December 1991, the UFZ was the first and only research institute in the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres to be exclusively dedicated to environmental research. Established in response to the severely polluted landscape in central Germany, the UFZ has since become an acknowledged centre of expertise in the remediation and renaturalisation of contaminated landscapes, as well as the preservation of natural landscapes worldwide. It currently employs around 840 staff in total and is 90% funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, with the regional governments of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt sharing the remaining 10 percent equally. UFZ is located at the towns of Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg.
Being an international competence centre for environmental research, UFZ is investigating the interaction between man and environment in used and disturbed landscapes. UFZ develops concepts and methods to assure a healthy environment for future generations. Environmental research at the UFZ is increasingly targeted at global challenges and problems having a strong international dimension - as demonstrated by a close co-operation with Eastern Europe, Latin America and Southern Africa. Building on a solid scientific foundation, landscape-based research and natural sciences are combined within interdisciplinary research topics with environmental medicine, social sciences and ecological economics.
Research at UFZ is structured into the following departments:
- Analytical Chemistry - Aquatic Ecosystem Analysis - Bioanalytical Ecotoxicology - Bioremediation - Cell Toxicology - Community Ecology - Computational Landscape Ecology - Computational Environmental Systems - Conservation Ecology - Ecological Chemistry - Ecological Modelling - Economics - Effect-Directed Analysis - Environmental and Planning Law - Environmental Biotechnology - Environmental Immunology - Environmental Microbiology - Environmental Technology - Human Exposure Research and Epidemiology - Groundwater Remediation - Hydrogeology - Hydological Modelling - Isotope Biogeochemistry - Isotope Hydrology - Lake Research - Monitoring and Exploration Technologies - Proteomics - River Ecology - Software Engineering - Soil Chemistry - Soil Ecology - Soil Physics - System Ecotoxicology - Urban and Environmental Sociology - Urban Ecology, Environmental Planning and Transport
