Contaminated Systems, Risk Assessment and Remediation Strategies
|
The research strategy of the PEER network Contaminated Systems, Risk Assessment and Remediation Strategies has the following aims:
· Provide risk analysis of environmental contamination: - Quantification of soil and water pollutant levels in the EU - Scientifically justifiable environmental standards for soil and water - Integrated decision support tools for sustainable ecosystem management - A scheme for effective risk communication - Refinement of risk management and remediation tools · Provide generally accepted and policy-supported tools for risk assessment and risk management procedures across the EU · Develop an Emergency Task Force for biological, chemical and physical accidents and crisis · Provide tools to mitigate impacts on human health: - Risk assessment under multiple stressor scenarios (e.g. exposure to multiple chemicals under fluctuating environmental conditions) - Determination of appropriate limit values - Idenfication of new vectors for, and causes of, disease and ill-health - Development of new diagnostic and prognostic techniques · Develop remediation strategies, especially consistent and harmonized procedures (protocols) for new and emerging remediation technologies · Provide expertise on system-immanent driving forces such as - Bioavailability, degradation, formation and fate of metabolites - Mass balance, discrimination of biotic/abiotic processes - Kinetics and reefs, endpoints, compilation criteria - Proof of long term efficacy, costs - Collaborate benefits, spin-off
