Society, Natural Resources and Environmental Policy

The challenge of the research in Society, natural resources and environmental policy is to make sustainable development operable. In order to achieve this goal integrated research is conducted bridging the natural and the social sciences on the one hand and science and society on the other. Important research questions are the measurement of sustainability using indicators, the evaluation of existing and development of new policy instruments for environmental protection, the development of ecological-economic models and the improvement of the conflict resolution potential of various instruments.

One major achievement of the socio-economic research of the PEER institutes has been the organisation of the PEER conference "Use of Indicators for Sustainability". In this conference policy-relevant questions were addressed on how to develop and use indicators for sustainable development, which have both a solid scientific basis and the potential to meet the demands of the political sector and the society.

The special expertise of the socio-economic scientists working on environmental issues within the PEER network is to carry out basic as well as applied research using a transdisciplinary approach that combines different disciplines from social sciences (economics, law, political science, sociology) and natural sciences.

Various methodological approaches such as
· cost-benefit-analysis and multi-criteria approaches,
· comparative studies,
· institutional analysis and
· ecological-economic modelling

are applied to policy areas that include
· water management,
· biodiversity protection,
· climate change and
· governance and institutions.

Besides aiming at submitting proposals for Framework Programme 6 this PEER network aims also at co-ordinating and complementing research carried out and funded by the PEER institutes.
