Mission & Aims

The mission of the PEER Network for Biodiversity and Nature Conservation (CONNECT) is:
  • to address environmental problems on an international basis,
  • to develop and enhance international collaborative research programmes in priority areas of ecology and nature conservation,
  • to provide scientific underpinning for action on European and global problems in the field of environment and nature conservation.
At the scientific level of organisation, a number of specific aims which are essential to accomplishing the mission have been identified. These specific aims are:
  • to improve understanding of the factors determining the structure, composition and processes of ecosystems and species in Europe,
  • to enhance collaboration between Conservation Institutes through joint research programmes focused on priority themes,
  • to develop a sounder scientific basis for predicting and modelling environmental trends arising from natural and man-made changes on a European scale,
  • to integrate information on nature for management of biodiversity, sustainable use of natural resources, spatial planning purposes and cross sectoral policy-making,
  • to disseminate the results of the research to those responsible for the protection, management and use of natural resources at the European scale, making full use of contemporary information technology.
